THE OFT-FORGOTTEN NATIVE POTENTILLA
FRUITACOSA
Rose family, and a 'potent' herb because
of the tannin contained in its rhyzome. [underground stem]
The tannin is especially important when
used in the tanning of leathers and as an astringent, i.e. to
stop the flow of blood when applied directly to open cuts, also
used as a fever-reducing agent.
We know and recognize the Potentilla today
as a zone 2 to 5 shrub with seemingly-constant flowering; used
as hedges, focal point plants, and potted shrubs able to survive
-40's with little preparation before freeze up.
Whether hot dry locations or moist partial
shade areas, the colors of the shrub are many and dependable
...yellow/orange/red/white/lime-green/pink and even yellow/ orange.
Also in popular varieties: Gold Star / Tangerine / Primrose /
Coronation / Triumph / and Gold Drop.
Visit your local nursery for containerized
Potentilla.
