PREPARING PERENNIALS FOR WINTER
Hi Stan:
We live in Edmonton, south-west. My
perennials have been green and
blooming right until the snow hit yesterday, in fact, I brought
in a rose on Oct 15th, the bush " Manitoba Parks" is
still green, therefore has not been put to bed properly. My clematis
had a new bloom Friday. Was still there yesterday. Could you
please give me some advice? I have Gaillardia, Day-lilies and
Echinacea are still standing out there.
Thank You, I really enjoy your show
on CHED.

Marina: Thanks for the comments
re: the show. You have chosen some of the best of our Zone 3
to 4 varieties that thrive in the ever changing conditions of
central Alberta.
I am assuming your yard is showing the same white stuff we have
here at Chipman, and is a perfect time and condition to mulch
on top of the snow, with the (hopefully) dried leaves or grass
clipping or dry peat moss or shavings.
No cutting back until mid November. The rose is one of the hardiest
and will thrive next year if the mulching duties are performed.
Clematis and rudbeckia can be left as is so the birds have a
treat. Mulch them well now, and cut back in early March.
Keep in touch.
