WINTERING MUMS

Hello Stan:

I have several garden mums and would like to know how to prepare them for winter. We live in West Edmonton.

Thank you,
Max

Max - Good for you to grow hardy mums. There are some good specimens on the market and expect more to add in the early spring. Mums are short day growers, which means they set the bud and begin to show flower color in the dark. ie. they vegetate in the light and begin the flower initiation in the dark. Altering light and darkness with artificial means, can control these processes.

Winter care procedures are.. cut down the current years growth to 6 inches above ground. Leave the new growth surrounding the stems at ground level. By November, water well, then mulch the entire plant with dry leaves or peat moss.

Cuttings can easily be taken in the late spring to become transplants by end on May.
