WINTERING DAHLIAS

Hello Stan:

I pulled out of a planter several dahlias that had been ravaged by the frost. To my amazement, there were green, live, new shoots at the base of each plant. I would like to over-winter these bedding plant dahlias if possible.

What do I do?

Pat

Pat - Although dahlias are considered annuals in our region, they will over winter and produce new growth that stalls out this time of year when growing in temperate climates.

Because of our killing temps here, we have to store the tubers as we do our potatoes or tuberous begonias. Your plants will promote small tubers the first years growth from seed.
It is unlikely the plant if wintered in a pot and treated as a cold crop house plant will survive.

Keep in touch.
