TWISTED WILLOW TRUNKS
HI Stan:
Somewhere in my studies I came across
why Willow tree trunks (i.e.
Laura Leaf Willow) grow in a twisted manner. I was not paying
enough attention and now cannot locate this info. Every time
I see a beautiful willow I wonder ?????
Please set my me at peace - I know I
read it somewhere???

Cindy- Rest easy. The cause of
the twisted willow may be three fold:
1. prevailing winds will show its effect after some years.
2. an insect, or insects injecting toxins into the tree, can
cause the cellular growth to be altered and begin contorting
the trunk and or stems.
3. if old enough, the tree succumbs to the Coreolis [spelling
is iffy] effect. This is the result of the earth's rotation upon
trees, as they begin to twist to the left or right, depending
in the hemisphere they are growing.....of course there is the
other reason, just cuz.
NB: Vines show this and are classified as dextorsum or sinistorsum.
Good eh ?
