Can you give a list of plants (regular not exotic) that are found in our flower gardens that are poisonous to dogs? i.e. is Clematis one of them? Have never heard of a family pet being poisoned, but one needs to be cautious. Thanks for your help.
Pat
Pat - Most plants are toxic to something, although it is the toxins that the plant produces to protect themselves, that may not effect anything but the preprogrammed pest or disease that may attack them.
Rhubarb leaves and datura, are likely the most poisonous plants in any garden, other than Plantain, Lobelia, some Poppies, Rhododendron, Monks Hood, Buttercup, Nightshade, and Hellebore. Oh and most of the bulb plants that bloom on spring.. not tulips.
The thing of it is, it would take quite a bit of the active ingredient, whether in leaves, berries, stems and or the root systems to do much damage.
However, the clematis is very poisonous, if it is the Virgins Bower.. a native and quite hardy perennial that does well in the woods of the foothills, and if propagated, in the perennial garden.
There may be some concern with the hybridized plants, but have never heard of pet problems in connection with the clematis.
You might want to phone a few Vets. to get a more opinionated answer.
Good query.BACK
