Thistles Hi Stan: Thistles are my problem in the backyard. I have a doggy in the backyard and feel not able to put Weedkiller down because of that. There is a Fall fertilizer with weed and feed on the market by scotts is that advisable if I water it in right away? If u have time to reply it would be appreciated. Thanks Renate Renate: There are no herbicides that will kill thistles and leave no residue. The closest you will come to a control that won't leave a residue, is the ready to use [RTU] Round Up. This product is formulated for narrow leafed plants, but will be quite effective if used on the thistles early in the spring, or at the 3 to 4th leaf stage. To apply any herbicide now would be iffy, and with little or no success. You are correct in keeping your dog off the grass if sprayed with most other lawn herbicides, but Round Up leaves no toxic trace once it hits the ground. To make sure.... Leaving your dog indoors for an hour or two after application of the Round Up will insure a safe and happy dog.
