Tamarack Trees Stan - I hope you can help! I don't want to kill anymore tamarack trees in my attempt to transplant them! We live on just west of Edmonton about 30 minutes (by Calahoo). We have a very special property, where six acres are spruce and tamarack bogs. We have tried a few times to transplant some of these tamarack trees (about 3 to 4 feet high) into our yard. The ground is still quite peat mossy here. We have many of these growing in the bog area of our property and we really enjoy these trees and would like to have a few close to our house. But they always die. Do you have any idea if I can do this and keep them alive! Or should I just stick with digging up spruce trees? If so, is fall a good time. We have many about 4 to 5 feet high that we could try. Thanks ever so much. Therise
Therise, Tamarack is a very fine tree that requires a distinctive and necessary media in which to thrive. If not exactly the same, not similar, conditions of their native rooting media, these trees will not adapt. If however you transplant some of last seasons seedlings into your home property, they may have the best chance to adapt without to much stress. Spring is always best for best results. Hope this helps. |
