SKUNK PROBLEMS

Dear Stan:

Any suggestions for keeping skunks away from yards, houses, etc? We live north of Westlock, AB.

Pat - Like keeping bears and cats away, you must not leave any 'bait or attractment' around the yard to encourage their visits. Skunks are omnivorus. They enjoy a well balanced meal: onions, carrots, apples tulip bulbs, fresh mice, birds eggs and compost piles.

Find an old radio at a garage sale or pawn shop, and install it under a weather shelter to play all night. Most animals stay away from the sounds of western and Celtic music. Hard rock especially.

Skunks make great pets, and when tamed need not have their scent glands removed.

Hope this helps. If all else fails, see your local county office to borrow a 'live trap' so you can relocate the rodent.
