POPLAR SHOOTS

Hi Stan,

I have 'volunteer' pyramidal poplars that are not coming in appropriate places. I dug one and moved (12" high) and it died. Do I put into water first to encourage roots or how long of the root system do I need to dig? Anything special to moving these shoots? Thanks,

Betty

Hi Betty,

Pyramid, Swedish and Tower poplar are all of the same genus, that includes the native Black poplar and the white or Aspen poplar of the prairies. Their habit of sending very aggressive roots into the soil that ultimately begin to sprout suckers along the shallow roots, is a commonality of them all. The only difference between them all, is how long it takes to invade their surroundings. Most leafed trees or shrubs should be moved only after the foliage has dropped.

You might be lucky if the treeling has already been moved and is diligently promoting a new root system. Watering a few times in the fall up to freezing temperatures is about all it takes to satisfy them.
