Nanking Cherry Bush

Dear Stan

What I need to know, Stan, is it possible (wise?) to divide a Nanking Cherry bush? The bushes I have are quite large (6-8ft tall), or should I just use the suckers to start new plants? Also, I want to move these bushes, when is the best time of the year to do this and is there anything special I should know before I do this?

Stan, thanks for your help and I really enjoy your show!!

Diann ...re: your Nanking cherry : to divide any plant in full leaf is a no-no, especially mid summer. However, if the suckers are less than a foot tall, they can be excised from the parent to include a root system, and planted immediately. During the recovery period of the rooted seedling, hourly misting with water is necessary to maintain the leaf structure and the plants ability to re-root into the new soil. Misting can be tapered off in a week, and the progeny will continue. If you wanted to remove half or a quarter of the existing shrub in mid fall, it can be done by using a very sharp spade to vertically cut down into the root area and separate from the parent.

Thanks for your kind comments,
