Mulching Leaves

Stan - Would it be advisable to mulch the leaves from poplar & balm or cottonwood trees and leave them on the lawn over winter? The lawn in question is at a lake lot and is not a thick lawn, it was planted on top soil from bush mixed with clay, and is doing fairly well.

Thank You,

Ken

Ken - A good topical question. Busy home owners like the answer. Yes you can leave the clippings and yes it is a good and healthy procedure to end the grass cutting season with. In the early spring, even before the grass shows new growth, go over the area and bag the bits, then work them into the garden or use as a mulch under perennials or shrubs to limit weed growth and at the same time contain moisture and help feed the soils micro life.

Take care,
