THE USE OF LIME
Greetings Stan!
I am sending this on behalf of my mother Josephine who faithfully listens to your show . Is it necessary to add lime annually to Edmonton gardens?
Where does one have soil quality assessed?
Thank You
Mitch
Mitch .. Big Hi to Mom..... The necessity of adding lime to garden soils in the Edmonton area is rare.
The natural pH of the local soil is quite high, meaning a neutral to alkaline condition. Lime raises the soils pH, and when compounded by using house water, which has a reading of 9, the plants to be grown will not do as well with any liming.
Low numbers on the pH scale indicates acid. Neutral on the scale is 5.5, and alkaline is measured from neutral to 10.
Most garden centres will have the very inexpensive [$4.00], soil test kit that can be used to determine the values of nitrogen, phosphates and potash plus the pH, which is the measure of the power of Hydrogen in the soil.
Ferry Morse and Sudbury test kits are the best for the home grower.Good to hear from you.
