Fall Transplanting
Dear Stan;
Transplanting in the fall. The weather is wet and cold now, what is the last date we can transplant plants like roses (Explorer) bleeding hearts, lilies.
Thanks,
Susan (Edmonton)
Susan - Fall transplanting can be very successful if done with-in the next 2 or 3 weeks. If the plants are in pots now and nursery or greenhouse grown, so much the better as they will have a good root system, and will suffer no serious stress. If the plants are being dug from a location and then transported to the new area.. do the planting as soon as possible as they have to re grow the so- necessary feeder roots. Sod is taken from the field and transplanted in to freeze up. A good watering, and very little fertilizer. You should only need a feed of bone meal with the soil as you fill in around the root area.
Good fall days ahead.
