Lawns - Dog Urine

Hello-I have a female dog, as you probably know, the urine kills the grass. I don't have a problem about it during the summer months and I usually fix the burnt grass in a few days. What I am asking is, what can I do to protect my lawn in the winter time so the urine doesn't terminally kill the roots of the grass? The urine melts the snow(with little we get) and warms up the grass which it eventually kills the roots. What kind of preparation(s) can I do or do I need to place plastic all over my yard??!!! Thanks and I like to comment on that I very much enjoy your show. Look forward in hearing from you!

Darin - re: your lawn care and winter preparation for the inevitable wewees: before final freeze up, soak the lawn to generally leach out salts and acids. This should take about 3 to 5 gallons of water per square foot of lawn. Measure the square footage of turf, then time the minutes it takes to fill a five gallon pail of water from the hose. Minutes times the lawns measure indicates how long the water through the sprinkler should be left on. This watering procedure can be prolonged to reach the desired quantity over 3, 4 or 5 days. Now to the dog, when you feed the dog, mix in one or two tablespoons of powdered milk with the food twice or three times a week. This will neutralize the acid in the urine. We have been doing this for years with our dogs and although some spots do show, we can blame them on bacterial problems.
