Critter Litter

Stan - Thanks again for the tip. Just for your information, I've been making calls to several nurseries/greenhouses and none of them carry or have every carried Critter Litter or anything similar. Can you tell me a specific place to find it? They have been telling me that Gypsum, Vermiculite, etc. will do the same thing. Do you agree??

Eryn - We'll get this right yet. It never fails to amaze me that some hort. outlets are so ignorant of the soil amendments and their benefits on the market, or that they are failing to recognize the potential for more sales that contribute to crops and satisfied customers. the 'Critter Litter' is shavings. Clean dry compacted coarse wood material that is sold in 4 cubic foot bales. Not quite as good as chopped straw, and with-out the weed seeds and easier to use.

I have just phoned Ellerslie Gift and Garden Centre, and they have lots, as they have for the past 4 years. One bale will cover 100 square feet. The advice you received to use vermiculite and gypsum will result in compacted and sticky soil with no benefit but that of an ill informed answer to your query. Incidently, the C Litter began on the market after years of informing my listeners about using shavings as a soil additive and pathing mulch: it was available at a lumber mill in Atchison Park west of Edmonton, and only in the last few years has the company begun to package rather than only carry the material in bulk at their mill.
