Dragon Wing Begonias

Stan - I have had good luck starting Geranium cuttings and was wondering if I could start cuttings from Dragon Wing Begonias the same way. I just dip them in #1 rooting hormone plant in perlite and mist. It takes about 2 weeks to develop roots. I have had about a 75% success rate and hoping I could do the same with Dragon Wing Begonias.

Thank you,
Dave

Dave - The begonia you have is classed as a Rex Begonia, and easy to multiply by cuttings. Do the same with the begonia as you did with the geranium, but take the leaf with some stem attached. Medium grind perlite is best, especially when sitting on a heat source of 75 degrees F. As you hold the leaf, cut the stem off including a very small bit of the leaf it is growing from. Dip into the root hormone, which is no more than dried rancid milk, then firm into a depression in the perlite so it is being held at a 50 to 60 degree angle. Take as many as you want, and then mist with a hand sprayer until they begin to show strength enough to stand quite turgid. Warm room temps and bright light will encourage rooting. Pot into a 'peat lite' mix of peatmoss, sand and perlite.

Keep in touch.
