![]() Apple Tree Hi, I planted a fall red apple tree on June 30,it was in a peat pot we were told to score the pot and cut the rim off. After 2 weeks the leaves were shriveling so we dug it out and took the pot off. All the leaves fell off and then it got buds on it. Now it is blooming !! Will this tree survive the winter? Also can you recommend some books that are good for pruning and care of trees and shrubs? We live on Ellerslie Road in Edmonton. Thanks, Debbie Deb - Planting apple trees should go rather smoothly when you have been advised of ALL the procedures. Yes the pot should be removed. Then after digging the planting hole at least twice the size and depth of the removed pot, fill with water to begin loosening the surrounding soil. Unlikely all the water will be absorbed, but when half full hold the tree root ball upright and fill the balance of the cavity with good garden soil. Stake the tree using 2 supports parallel to the tree and beyond the disturbed ground. Tie a figure of eight from one support, around the tree trunk then tie off on the opposite post. Fertilize with Root Booster, and water when the top third of the soil dries. Loosing leaves and branches is not a good thing. Late out of season flowering is not a good thing.
