Flower Identification

Hi Stan:

Would you please identify the attached flower? What is the seed distribution system called? I enjoy your radio show.

Thanks for your time.

Doug.... Thanks for your note and photo that makes it easier to ID your plant. It is a plant that is becoming popular as a background or even a trellis type grower. Although referred to as a number of names like Hawiian orchid, the touch me not and sometimes the policemans helmet or Busy Lizzie. Botanicaly it is a hardy or tender herb of the Balsam family native to the Himalays and New Guinea. Even from the Cape of Good Hope. Colors of pink, white and carmine are evident. the plant you have is 'glandulifera roylei' The glandular part represents the pods that hold the seed and when ripe, will explode and disperse them outwards to ten feet. Not winter hardy as a root stock but will happily continue to survive quite well from the over-wintering seeds. Stan.
